History of Kerala Through Cartoons
An exhibition of cartoons depicting the history of Kerala was jointly organized by the Kerala Advocates Literary Forum (KASAV) and the Kerala High Court Advocates Association, in collaboration with the Kerala Cartoon Academy. The exhibition was held from August 11 to 14, 2025, at the Kerala High Court complex. Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan inaugurated the exhibition. Advocate M.M. Monayi, KASAV President Advocate M.P. Ashok Kumar, Kerala Cartoon Academy Vice Chairperson Anoop Radhakrishnan, former Cartoon Academy Treasurer Advocate P.U. Noushad, Advocate Yeshwant Shenoy, Advocate K.L. Abdul Rasheed, Advocate Jasmine V.H., KASAV Secretary Advocate Saji Cheriyachan, and others participated in the event.
The exhibition, titled “Kerala’s Political History Through Cartoons,” featured 137 cartoons spanning from the first Malayalam cartoon published in 1919 up to 2025. The exhibition was curated by Advocate M.M. Monayi, former Chairman of the Kerala Cartoon Academy. It included caricatures of all Chief Ministers who governed Kerala, along with cartoons drawn by leading cartoonists based on major events from their respective periods. The most attractive aspect of the exhibition was its collection of cartoons portraying the interesting and dramatic developments in the politics of Travancore-Cochin and Kerala. The cartoons on display had originally appeared in various mainstream Malayalam publications.
Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan also inaugurated the closing ceremony. He remarked that just as cartoonists fight social evils by drawing cartoons with their brushes, advocates fight social evils through legal interpretations using their intellect. At the closing ceremony, Kerala Cartoon Academy Chairperson Sudheer Nath attended as the chief guest. He said that cartoons are the first investigative report of historical writing. That is one reason why cartoons, as a part of history, continue to enjoy acceptance even today. Kerala Cartoon Academy Chairperson Sudheer Nath also stated that exhibitions of historical cartoons would be organized in major cities across Kerala.
