 The 123rd Birth Anniversary of Cartoonist Shankar

The 123rd birth anniversary of cartoonist Shankar, who is regarded as the doyen of Indian cartooning, was celebrated in his birthplace on July 31. Kayamkulam MLA U. Prathibha and Municipal Chairperson P. Shashikala participated in the remembrance ceremony and floral tribute jointly organized by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi and the Kerala Cartoon Academy at the Shankar Memorial Cartoon Museum in Krishnapuram, Kayamkulam.

Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Secretary A.B.M. Joseph and Cartoon Academy Secretary A. Satheesh delivered the main commemorative speeches. A.B.N. Joseph said that Nehru was a person who accepted criticism, whereas Indira Gandhi eventually developed a tendency to turn away from criticism. He noted that it was significant that Shankar both started and later shut down *Shankar’s Weekly* as part of his stance in promoting cartoons, an art form of criticism.

A. Satheesh said that Shankar’s era was the golden age of cartoonists. Leaders used to accept criticism, but today the situation is such that it even puts the Emergency period to shame. Cartoon Academy executive committee members Suresh Haripad, Haridas Balakrishnan, senior member M.S. Mohanachandran, Karthika Kattanam, and others participated in the event.

ഇന്ത്യന്‍ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിന്‍റെ കുലപതി എന്ന് വിശേഷണമുള്ള കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റ് ശങ്കറിന്‍റെ 123 ാം ജന്‍മദിനം ജന്‍മനാട്ടില്‍ ജൂലൈ 31ന് ആഘോഷിച്ചു. കായംകുളത്ത്, ക്യഷ്ണപുരത്തുള്ള ശങ്കര്‍ സ്മാരക കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ മ്യൂസിയത്തില്‍ കേരള ലളിത കലാ അക്കാദമിയും, കേരള കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ അക്കാദമിയും സംയുക്തമായി സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച അനുസ്മരണത്തിലും, പുഷ്പാര്‍ച്ചനയിലും കായംകുളം എം.എല്‍.എ. യു പ്രതിഭ, മുനിസിപ്പല്‍ ചെയര്‍പേഴ്ണ്‍ പി. ശശികല എന്നിവര്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തു. കേരള ലളിതകലാ അക്കാദമി സെക്രട്ടറി എബി എം. ജോസഫ്, കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ അക്കാദമി സെക്രട്ടറി എ സതീഷ് എന്നിവര്‍ മുഖ്യ അനുസ്മരണ പ്രഭാഷണങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തി. വിമര്‍ശനങ്ങളെ സ്വീകരിച്ച വ്യക്തിയായിരുന്നു നെഹ്റു. എന്നാല്‍ വിമര്‍ശനങ്ങളോട് മുഖം തിരിക്കുന്ന സ്വഭാവമായിരുന്നു ഇന്ദിരാ ഗാന്ധിക്ക് ഒടുവിലുണ്ടായത്. വിമര്‍ശന കലയായ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണുകളെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് ശങ്കേഴ്സ് വീക്കിലി തുടങ്ങിയതും, അടച്ച് പൂട്ടിയതും ശങ്കറിന്‍റെ ഒരു നിലപാടായിരുന്നു എന്നത് ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണെന്ന് എബി എന്‍ ജോസഫ് പറഞ്ഞു. ശങ്കറിന്‍റെ കാലഘട്ടം കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റുകളുടെ സുവര്‍ണ്ണകാലമായിരുന്നു. വിമര്‍ശനങ്ങള്‍ നേതാക്കള്‍ സ്വീകരിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. ഇന്ന് അടിയന്തിരാവസ്ഥ കാലത്തെ പോലും നാണിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സാഹചര്യമാണുള്ളതെന്ന് എ സതീഷ് പറഞ്ഞു. കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ അക്കാദമി നിര്‍വ്വാഹക സമിതി അംഗങ്ങളായ സുരേഷ് ഹരിപ്പാട്, ഹരിദാസ് ബാലക്യഷ്ണന്‍, മുതിര്‍ന്ന അംഗം എം. എസ്. മോഹനചന്ദ്രന്‍, കാര്‍ത്തിക കറ്റാനം തുടങ്ങിയവര്‍ ചടങ്ങില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തു.
