Cartoon Salute on National Press Day

Every year on November 16, the Press Council of India celebrates National Press Day. In 2015, for the first time in history, the Kerala Cartoon Academy received an official invitation to the event. November 16, 2015, was truly a day for cartoons at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, a venue that has witnessed numerous national and international events. The occasion was the National Press Day celebration organized by the Press Council of India. It was dedicated to the memory of the late eminent cartoonists R. K. Laxman and Rajinder Puri. Throughout the ceremony, a large screen above the stage continuously displayed brief biographies and major cartoons of both artists.

The theme of that year's National Press Day was the importance and influence of cartoons and caricatures as a medium for expressing opinions. Accordingly, the event was filled with cartoons from the welcome address to the vote of thanks. As a result of the Kerala Cartoon Academy's efforts, the Press Council of India decided to institute national-level awards for cartoons and cartoon illustration starting that year, and the inaugural award was presented to Shashikumar of *The Indian Express*.

In his inaugural address, President Pranab Mukherjee also spoke extensively about cartoons. He began his speech by paying tribute to R. K. Laxman and Rajinder Puri. Before taking the stage, he toured the entire "Cartoon Pranam" cartoon and caricature exhibition jointly organized by the Press Council of India and the Kerala Cartoon Academy at Vigyan Bhavan Hall. In his speech, the President commended the Kerala Cartoon Academy for giving practical expression to the theme chosen for National Press Day.

Those who participated in the event included Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Press Council of India Chairman Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad, Bangladesh Press Council Chairman Justice Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed, Press Council of India Secretary Vibhav Bhargava, and others. Renowned cartoonist Sudhir Tailang represented Indian cartoonists at the function. Representing the Kerala Cartoon Academy were Secretary Sudhir Nath and Vice Chairman Jayaraj Velloor. Academy members Dwijith Payyannur and A. V. Prashanth, along with around twenty-five cartoonists from Delhi and its surrounding areas, were also present.

2015 നവംബര്‍ 16ാം തിയതി എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും പ്രസ്സ് കൗണ്‍സില്‍ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ ദേശിയ മാധ്യമ ദിനമായി ആഘോഷിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇത്തവണ ചരിത്രത്തിലാദ്യമായി കേരളാ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ അക്കാദമിക്ക് ചടങ്ങിലേയ്ക്ക് ഔദ്യോഗിക ക്ഷണം ലഭിച്ചു. നിരവധി ദേശീയ അന്തര്‍ദേശീയ പരിപാടികള്‍ക്ക് സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിച്ച ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹിയിലെ വിജ്ഞാന്‍ ഭവനില്‍ 2015 നവംബര്‍ 16 ഒരു കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ ദിവസമായിരുന്നു. പ്രസ്സ് കൗണ്‍സില്‍ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച ദേശീയ മാധ്യമ ദിനാചരണമായിരുന്നു പരിപാടി. അതു സമര്‍പ്പിച്ചതാകട്ടെ, അന്തരിച്ച പ്രഗത്ഭ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റുകളായ ആര്‍. കെ. ലക്ഷ്മണനും രജീന്ദര്‍ പുരിയ്ക്കും. ചടങ്ങില്‍ ഉടനീളം, വേദിയുടെ മുകളിലെ വലിയ തിരശ്ശീലയില്‍ ഇരുവരുടെയും ലഘു ജീവചരിത്രവും പ്രധാന കാര്‍ട്ടൂണുകളും മിന്നിമറിഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ടേയിരിന്നു. ഈ വര്‍ഷത്തെ ദേശീയ മാധ്യമ ദിനത്തിന്‍റെ വിഷയം അഭിപ്രായ പ്രകടനത്തിനുള്ള വിനിമയ മാധ്യമമെന്ന നിലയില്‍ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണുകളുടെയും കാരിക്കേച്ചറുകളുടെയും പ്രാധാന്യവും സ്വാധീനവുമെന്നതായിരുന്നു. അത് കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ, സ്വാഗതം മുതല്‍ നന്ദി വരെ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു നിന്നു. കേരള കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ അക്കാദമി നടത്തിയ ഇടപെടലിന്‍റെ ഭാഗമായി കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിനും കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ ഇല്ല്യുസ്ട്രേഷനും ഈ വര്‍ഷം മുതല്‍ ദേശിയ തലത്തില്‍ അവാര്‍ൗ് നല്‍കുവാന്‍ പ്രസ്സ് കൗണ്‍സില്‍ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും, ആദ്യ പുരസ്ക്കാരം ഇന്ത്യന്‍ എക്സ്പ്രസിലെ ശശികുമാറിന് സമ്മാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 

  പരിപാടി ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു സംസാരിച്ച രാഷ്ട്രപതി പ്രണബ് മുഖര്‍ജ്ജയുടെ വാക്കുകളിലും ഏറെ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണുകളായിരുന്നു. ആര്‍.കെ.ലക്ഷ്മണിനും രജീന്ദര്‍ പുരിയ്ക്കും ആദരാഞ്ജലികള്‍ അര്‍പ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം പ്രഭാഷണം തുടങ്ങിയത്. വിജ്ഞാന്‍ ഭവന്‍ ഹാളില്‍ പ്രസ് കൗണ്‍സില്‍ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യയും കേരളാ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ അക്കാദമിയും ചേണ്‍ന്നൊരുക്കിയ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ പ്രണണാം എന്ന കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍/കാരിക്കേച്ചര്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശനം മുഴുവനും നടന്നു കണ്ടതിനു ശേഷമാണ്  അദ്ദേഹം വേദിയിലെത്തിയത്. മാധ്യമ ദിവസത്തെ ചര്‍ച്ചാ വിഷയത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രാവര്‍ത്തിക രൂപമൊരുക്കിയത്തിന് കേരളാ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ അക്കാദമിയെ രാഷ്ട്രപതി പ്രസംഗത്തില്‍ അഭിനന്ദിച്ചു.

വാര്‍ത്താ വിതരണ പ്രക്ഷേപണ സഹമന്ത്രി രാജ്യവര്‍ദ്ധന്‍ സിംഗ് റത്തോഡ്, പ്രസ് കൗണ്‍സില്‍ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ ചെയര്‍മാന്‍ ജസ്റ്റീസ് ചന്ദ്രമൗലി കുമാര്‍ പ്രസാദ്, പ്രസ് കൗണ്‍സില്‍ ഓഫ് ബംഗ്ലാദേശ് ചെയര്‍മാന്‍ ജസ്റ്റീസ് മംമ്താജ് ഉദ്ദീന്‍ അഹമ്മദ്, പ്രസ് കൗണ്‍സില്‍ ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യ സെക്രട്ടറി വിഭവ് ഭാര്‍ഗവ തുടങ്ങിയവര്‍ പങ്കെടുത്ത ചടങ്ങില്‍ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റുകളെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിച്ചത് പ്രശസ്ത  കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റ് സുധീര്‍ തയ്ലാങായിരുന്നു. കേരളാ കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ അക്കാദമിയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടി ചടങ്ങില്‍ സെക്രട്ടറി സുധീര്‍ നാഥും, വൈസ് ചെയര്‍മാന്‍ ജയരാജ് വെള്ളൂരും പങ്കെടുത്തു. അക്കാദമി അംഗങ്ങളായ ദ്വിജിത് പയ്യന്നൂര്‍, എ വി പ്രശാന്ത് തുടങ്ങിയവര്‍ക്കൊപ്പം ഡല്‍ഹിയിലും പരിസര പ്രദേശത്തുമുള്ള ഇരുപത്തിയഞ്ചോളം കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റുകളും സന്നിഹിതരായിരുന്നു.
