K.S. Pillai Memorial and Award Presentation

A memorial meeting to honor K.S. Pillai, the pride of Malayalam cartoon art, was convened at the Kollam Press Club on April 30, 2008, the anniversary of his passing. The meeting, held in cooperation with the Kollam Press Club, was presided over by Press Club President Sreejith K. Variyar. Cartoonist Sukumar delivered the K.S. Pillai Memorial Lecture.

The K.S. Pillai Award was presented posthumously to Professor G. Somanathan. Mrs. Somanathan and their daughter Smita Somanathan received the award from Adv. M. M. Monayi, Chairman of the Kerala Cartoon Academy. Dr. B. A. Rajakrishnan, M. S. Mohanachandran, Thomson, and Smita Somanathan also spoke at the event. The award was instituted by cartoonist Sukumar in memory of his mentor, K.S. Pillai.

മലയാള കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ കലയുടെ അഭിമാനമായ കെ.എസ്. പിള്ളയെ അനുസ്മരിക്കാന്‍ കൊല്ലം പ്രസ്സ് ക്ലബില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ചരമ ദിനമായ 2008 ഏപ്രില്‍ 30ന് സമ്മേളനം വിളിച്ചുകൂട്ടി. കൊല്ലം പ്രസ്സ് ക്ലബിന്‍റെ സഹകരണത്തോടെ ചേര്‍ന്ന യോഗത്തില്‍ പ്രസ്സ ക്ലബ്ബ് പ്രസിഡന്‍റ് ശ്രീജിത്ത് കെ. വാര്യാര്‍ അദ്ധ്യക്ഷനായിരുന്നു. കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റ് സുകുമാര്‍ കെ. എസ്. പിള്ള അനുസ്മരണ പ്രഭാഷണം നടത്തി. കെ.എസ്. പിള്ള അവാര്‍ഡ് മരണാനന്തര ബഹുമതിയായി പ്രൊഫസര്‍ ജി. സോമനാഥനാണ് ലഭിച്ചത്. കേരള കാര്‍ട്ടൂണ്‍ അക്കാദമി ചെയര്‍മാന്‍ അഡ്വ. എം. എം.മോനായിയില്‍ നിന്നും ശ്രീമതി സോമനാഥനും മകള്‍ സ്മിത സോമനാഥനും അവാര്‍ഡ് ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി. ഡോ. ബി. എ. രാജാക്യഷ്ണന്‍, എം. എസ്. മോഹനചന്ദ്രന്‍, തോംസണ്‍, സ്മിത സോമനാഥന്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ സംസാരിച്ചു. കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിസ്റ്റ് സുകുമാര്‍ തന്‍റെ ഗുരുവായ കെ.എസ് പിള്ളയുടെ സ്മരണാര്‍ത്ഥം ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയതാണ് അവാര്‍ഡ്.

  Toon Craft Season 2 Season 2 of the two-day skill development cartoon camp, organized exclusively for members of the Kerala Cartoon Academy, was held on March 21 and 22, 2026, at the Thottumukham YMCA on the banks of the Periyar River in Aluva. Academy Executive Committee member and cartoonist Ratheesh Ravi served as the camp director. Thirty-nine members of the Kerala Cartoon Academy participated in the camp. The two-day skill development camp, led by the Kerala Cartoon Academy, was organized as a prelude to the Election Cartoon Exhibition. On the first day, March 21, K. Unnikrishnan, former chairman of the Kerala Cartoon Academy and a senior cartoonist, spoke on the topic “The Journey of a Line,” discussing the stories behind cartoons and their origins. Kerala Cartoon Academy honored its member Davinchi Suresh at the annual general meeting held in Ernakulam. The chief guest, Father Justin Kaipadampadan, Managing Director of Sathyadeepam, draped him with a ceremonial shawl. Kerala Cartoon Academy Chairman Sudheer Nath presented a memento. Secretary A. Satheesh and Treasurer B. Sajeev Balakrishnan extended their greetings and witnessed the ceremony, along with prominent cartoonists from Kerala. The Kerala Cartoon Academy honored Davinchi Suresh in recognition of his unique achievements in the field of visual arts across one hundred different media. Davinchi Suresh is an artist who has brought his own responses to numerous social issues that occurred in Kerala over the past ten years before the public through his sculptural artworks.
